The North Coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) is sheltered and swimmable at every tide, all year round, and it's also sheltered from the strongest trade winds between June and October. That makes it best for swimmers, sunbathers, and travellers who want reliable water access, and it has a livelier general vibe, with more nightlife and beach bars, especially around Nungwi.
The East Coast (Paje, Bwejuu, Jambiani, Matemwe), by contrast, is tide-dependent for swimming, with water pulling well back at low tide, and it's consistently windy — the reason it's Zanzibar's kitesurfing hub. It suits kitesurfers and travellers happy to work around the tide chart, with a quieter, more spread-out, slower-paced vibe overall.
If swimming whenever you feel like it matters more to you than wind, the north coast is the safer pick regardless of month.
